Meet Sarah Byler

My name is Sarah Byler, and I am running for the Hilliard Board of Education (HBOE) because I believe in the power of strong schools and engaged communities. As a mother and dedicated volunteer, I have firsthand experience with our excellent schools and their positive impact on our community. I am ready to take my passion and commitment to the HBOE to ensure a quality education for all students, support for our teachers and staff, and meaningful collaboration between the community and our schools.

Background

I grew up in Granger, Indiana, a suburb of South Bend. In high school, I was active in choir — including the unforgettable experience of singing at Carnegie Hall in New York City. In addition, I was very active in my church youth group which cultivated in me empathy for others, a love for service, and a commitment to relational community.

I completed my college degree in Youth Ministry at Huntington University, where I deepened my commitment to my faith and supporting young people. After college, I served as a Youth Minister for eight years, walking alongside teens and their families through life’s big questions and challenges. After my husband and I welcomed our 2 sons, I transitioned to a full-time parent role in order to dedicate my time to my family and serve our community in volunteer roles.

In 2016, my family decided to move to Central Ohio and had the flexibility to live in any community in the area. We chose Hilliard specifically for the strong sense of community and the excellent school system. My husband Wes and I have been married for almost 17 years. We have 2 boys: Jack is 14 and attends Weaver Middle School and Charlie is 10 and attends Avery Elementary School. Our family also has two adorable goldendoodles named Stella and Oliver.

Volunteering

Volunteering is one of my greatest passions. For four years, I served as a Steering Committee member for Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS), creating space for connection and support among moms of young children. I’ve served as an Adult Leader in the youth ministry program at Scioto Ridge United Methodist Church — our family’s church home — for the past seven years, mentoring teens through retreats, camps, outings, and weekly meetings. I continue to serve in that role and love using my experience and education to be a mentor to and invest in our teenagers.

Within Hilliard City Schools, I’ve assumed leadership roles that reflect my deep investment in our children’s future. I’ve served as PTO President and Vice President at Avery Elementary School and currently serve as Secretary of the Weaver Middle School PTO. In 2022, I was a member of the Community Design Team who developed the Portrait of a Learner for our students to be Ready for Tomorrow. I am very proud of the work our team of community members, teachers, students, and administrators did to identify five key competencies our students need for their future.

During the 2024 levy and bond campaign, I served as the Community Connections Coordinator. Alongside district and community leadership, I scheduled over 70 community conversations to inform our community on the importance of the levy and bond issue to maintain our excellent schools. Our campaign was a success with an overwhelming yes from our community for the levy and bond issue to ensure further investment in our programs and school infrastructure.
